Kathmandu, May 7. Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, has said that Gorkhapatra has been working for the public. Minister Timilsina said this while addressing a special program organized by the institution on the occasion of the 126th anniversary of Gorkhapatra publication.
Minister Timilsina congratulated and wished all the readers including the journalists and employees working in the institution. He emphasized the need to make the institution and its publications stronger. He mentioned that today's journalism and the time of Gorkhapatra publication are different. Gorkhapatra, which has a history to be proud of, has the responsibility of creating a beautiful history for tomorrow, he said. He requested not to be proud of only yesterday's history.
On the occasion, Minister Timilsina unveiled the Santhali and Hayu language pages published in Gorkhapatra. With these two languages, the number of national languages published on the new Nepal page of Gorkhapatra has reached 49. Including Nepali, Gorkhapatra has become a medium that provides news content in 50 languages.
Award was given to the winner of the 5-kilometer running competition organized on the occasion of the annual festival. Sanjay Shrestha of the Nepalese Army won the first prize in the 5-kilometer men's run, completing the distance in 14 minutes and 14 seconds. He received a medal and a cash prize. On the women's side, Purnalaxmi Nyoupane won the first prize, completing the distance in 19 minutes and 24 seconds.
The program, chaired by the Chief Editor of Gorkhapatra daily, Basnet, was attended by guests and employees, who were welcomed by Director Basyal, head of the administration department of the institution. Gorkhapatra publication, which was published on May 7, 1901, has completed 125 years and entered its 126th year on Thursday.
